New Mexico
"The Land of Enchantment"
Truly an enchanted land, New Mexico has a character all of its own, with a unique combination of individual architecture, scenery and history not to be found anywhere else in north america. The adobe buildings, perfect for the states dry but fairly extreme climate changes, complement and blend with the natural surroundings from which they evolved. Today a unique blend of style and function, they combine the building traditions of the Native American Pueblos with old Hispanic style.
Its cities are as varied as the scenery: Albuquerque, a bustling melting pot of a city, with university students, military personel, and curious tourists mingling with the locals who have been at home in this one time frontier crossroads for generations. The history of Albuquerque can still be seen on the route of the old route 66, which goes right through the center of town, in the older buildings abundant in the southern and downtown areas, and the petroglyphs national monument on the west side of town.
Santa Fe was the northern bastion of the Spanish who came as soldiers and priests attempting to win the local Indian population over by one means or another to their own beliefs. The spanish govenors house still stands proudly on the plaza, the oldest governmental building in the land. Santa Fe is now one of the most visited cities in the United States where art of nearly every form can be found in the shops and galleries that crowd the downtown area. LTo keep its unique atmosphere, local building laws ensure that everything in the downtown area is built in the traditional adobe style.
High up in the southern Rockies is the town of Taos, an artists paradise, founded by artists in the 1800s, who were enchanted by the natural beauty of the area. Today Taos boasts almost 100 galleries and art museums.

Truth or Consequences in the southern part of the state was named after the TV show, and is situated on one of the states largest lakes, fed by the famous Rio Grande River. The chile capital of the world, Hatch is just a few miles south of here on the way to Las Cruces. To the east lies the famous white sands national park, part of the military rocket range, and the town of Alamogordo. A short drive northeast from Alamogordo in the Sacramento mountains, is Lincoln county, where most of the buildings from the famous feud still stand ready to take you back in time, and the resort town of Ruidoso with horse racing in the summer, and skiing in the winter.
Southwest from T or C, as the locals call it, high in the national forest, lies Silver City, an old mining and cowboy town. Driving southwest from here you reach Deming, where one can find wonderful examples of New Mexican vineyards producing some excellent wines, then west to Lordsburg steeped in frontier history and the last major town before crossing into Atizona
West of Albuquerque on interstate 40 are the towns of Grants, and Gallup, doorways to the vast indian reservations of northwestern New Mexico, and the ancient cliff dwellings, Pueblos and many natural wonders of the area. Way up in the northwest corner of the state lies Farmington, which until recently was a town off the beaten track. The discovery of large reserves of oil and gas in the area has changed all that, and Farmington now bustles with industrial growth.
The eastern side of the state around Clovis and Portales host a rapidly growing dairy industry, with large international cheese factories bringing economical growth to these areas.
The southeast corner of the state you will find Roswell, where the aliens crash landed in 1947, and Carlsbad, home of the famous caverns.
